'His Masters Voice' (HMV)

'His Masters Voice' (HMV) had once published a pamphlet giving the history of gramophone record.

Gramophone was invented by Thomas Alva Edison in the 19th century.

Edison, who had invented many other gadgets like electric light and the motion picture camera, had become a legend even in his own time.

When he invented the gramophone record, which could record human voice for posterity, he wanted to record the voice of an eminent scholar on his first piece.

For that he chose Prof. Max Muller of England (a German by ethnicity), another great personality of the 19th century.

He wrote to Max Muller saying,

“I want to meet you and record your voice. When should I come?”

Max Muller who had great respect for Edison asked him to come on a suitable time when most of the scholars of the Europe would be gathering in England.

Accordingly, Edison took a ship and went to England. He was introduced to the audience. All cheered Edison’s presence.

Later at the request of Edison, Max Muller came on the stage and spoke in front of the instrument.

Then Edison went back to his laboratory and by afternoon came back with a disc & played it on the gramophone.

The audience was thrilled to hear the voice of Max Muller from the instrument.

They were glad that voices of great persons like Max Muller could be stored for the benefit of posterity.

After several rounds of applause and congratulations to Thomas Edison, Max Muller came to the stage and addressed the scholars and asked them,

“You heard my original voice in the morning. Then you heard the same voice coming out from this instrument in the afternoon. Do you understand what I said in the morning or what you heard in the afternoon?”

The audience fell silent because they could not understand the language in which Max Muller had spoken.

It was ‘Greek and Latin’ to them as they say.

But had it been Greek or Latin, they would have definitely understood because they were from various parts of Europe.

It was in a language which the European scholars had never heard.

Max Muller then explained what he had spoken.

He said that the language he spoke was Sanskrit and it was the first sloka of Rig Veda, which says "Agni Meele Purohitam”

This was the first recorded public version on the gramophone plate.

अग्निमीळे पुरोहितं यज्ञस्य देवं रत्वीजम।
होतारं रत्नधातमम।।
(Rig Veda 1.001.01)

Why did Max Muller choose this?

Addressing the audience he said,

“Vedas are the oldest text of the human race. And “Agni Meele Purohitam” is the first verse of Rig Veda.

In the most primordial time, when the people did not know how even to cover their bodies and lived by hunting and housed in caves, Indians had attained high civilization and they gave the world universal philosophies in the form of the Vedas.”

When “Agni Meele Purohitam” was replayed, the entire audience stood up in silence as a mark of respect.

The verse means :

“Oh Agni, You who gleam in the darkness, to You we come day by day, with devotion and bearing homage. So be of easy access to us, Agni, as a father to his son, abide with us for our well being."

Proud to be part of a truly glorious ancient civilization ...

Abakka Chowta

*Abakka Chowta*

(For those who love History)
----------------------------------------

The year was 1555. Portuguese colonial power was at its peak in the 1500’s. They destroyed Zamorins of Calicut. Defeated the Sultan of Bijapur. Took away Daman from the Sultan of Gujarat, established a colony in Mylapore, captured Bombay and made Goa as their headquarters. And while they were at it, pretty much unchallenged, they even ruined the ancient Kapaleeswarar Temple to build a Church over it.
Their next target, the super profitable port of Mangalore.

Their only bad luck, just 14 kilometres south of Mangalore was the small settlement of Ullal - ruled then by a feisty 30 year old woman - Abbakka Chowta.

Initially, they took her lightly and sent a few boats and soldiers to capture and bring her back to Goa - Those boats never came back.
Shocked and enraged, they sent a huge fleet of ships this time, under the command of much celebrated Admiral Dom Álvaro da Silveira - The admiral soon returned, badly injured and empty handed.

Thereafter, another Portuguese fleet was sent - only a few injured from the crew managed to make it back.

Then the Portuguese went on to capture the Mangalore port and the fort anyways, perhaps planning to tackle Mrs. Chowta from the convenient distance of the Mangalore fort.

After the successful capture of Mangalore, a huge army under João Peixoto, an experienced Portuguese General, was sent to Ullal.

The brief was simple: Subjugate Ullal and capture Abbakka Chowta.

The plan was foolproof- there was no way a 30 year old with a few men could withstand the might of an army of thousands with advanced weapons.

The Portuguese reached
Ullal and found it deserted. Abbakka was nowhere in sight. They roamed around, relaxed and thanked their stars - Just when they were about to call it a victory - Mrs Chowta attacked with 200 of her chosen men - there was chaos all around and many portuguese lost their lives even without a fight - General João Peixoto was assassinated, 70 portuguese were captured and the rest just ran away.

So if you’re Abbakka Chowta, who’s just defeated a large army of aggressors, killed a general, captured fighters and defended her city - What will you do? - Rest and enjoy the moment right? - Right? - No!

Rani Abbakka Chowta, rode with her men towards Mangalore that same night, and laid a siege of the Mangalore fort - She not just broke inside the fort successfully - but assassinated Admiral Mascarenhas the Chief of the Portuguese power there and forced the remaining Portuguese to vacate the fort.

She didn’t just stop at this but went on to even capture the Portuguese settlement at Kundapura, a full 100 kms, north of Mangalore - Just to make a point.

The Portuguese finally managed to get back at Abbakka Chowta by *convincing her estranged husband, to betray for money.* She was arrested and put in the prison, where she revolted again and was killed while trying to escape.

THE HEIGHT OF INTELLIGENCE

*"THE HEIGHT OF INTELLIGENCE"*

Once *Iswarchandra Vidyasagar* jokingly asked *Michel Madhusudan Dutt,* "As you are master in English, can you make a sentence without using 'E'?"

He wrote this...

*"I doubt I can. It’s a major part of many many words. Omitting it, is as hard as making muffins without flour. It’s as hard as spitting without saliva, napping without a pillow, driving a train without tracks, sailing to Russia without a boatload  and washing your hands without soap. And, anyway, what would I gain? An award? A cash bonus? Bragging rights? Why should I strain my brain? It’s not worth doing."*

Hats Off To The Genius!!!

Evolution science behind Dashavatar

Salute Our Mythology:

"Mom, I am a genetic scientist. I am working in the US on the evolution of man. Theory of evolution. Charles Darwin, have you heard of him? " Vasu asked.

His Mother sat next to him,  smiled and said, "I know about Darwin, Vasu. But Have you heard of Dashavatar? The ten avatars of Vishnu?"

Vasu replied 'no'.

"Ok! Then let me tell you what
you and your Darwin don't know.

         Listen carefully-

The first avatar was the Matsya avatar, it means the fish. That is because life began in the water. Is that not right?"

Vasu began to listen with a little more attention.

She continued, "Then came the Kurma Avatar, which means the tortoise, because life moved from the water to the land. The amphibian! So the Tortoise denoted the evolution from sea to land.

Third avatar was Varaha, the wild boar, which meant the wild animals with not much intellect, you call them the Dinosaurs, correct?" Vasu nodded wide eyed.

"The fourth avatar was Narasimha, half man and half animal, the evolution from wild animals to intelligent beings.

Fifth, the Waman avatar, the midget or dwarf, who could grow really tall. Do you know why that is? Because, there were two kinds of humans, Homo Erectus and Homo Sapiens and Homo Sapiens won that battle."

Vasu could see that his Mother was in full flow and he was stupefied.

"The Sixth avatar was Parshuram, the man who wielded the axe, the man who was a cave and forest dweller. Angry, and not social.

The seventh avatar was Ram, the first rational thinking social being, who practised and laid out the laws of society and the basis of human relationships.

The Eighth avatar was Balarama, a true farmer who showed  value of agriculture in the life.

The Ninth avatar was Krishna, the statesman, the politician, the diplomat, the Ambassador, the sutile interpreter, the lover who played the game of society and taught how to live and thrive in the adhaarmic social structure.

And finally, my boy, will come Kalki, the man you are working on. The man who will be genetically supreme."

Vasu looked at his Mother speechless. "This is amazing Mom, how did you .... ? This makes sense!"

She said, "Yes it does Vasu! We Indians knew some amazing things, but just didn't know how to pass it on scientifically. So we made them into mythological stories.  Mythology creates faith and makes man sensible. It is just the way you look at it - Religious or Scientific. Your call."
Vasu touched the feet of his mother and hugged her. She kissed him smilingly.

science underlying Rakshabandhan-

science underlying Rakshabandhan-

On the day of Shravan Pournima high speed waves of Yama Principle are activated in the universe. Particles of the Tejtattva are generated due to the friction between these high speed waves. These particles of Tejtattva are emitted into the atmosphere. They become inert because of their union with the earth particles and they create a covering on the ground. This is called raksha.

Bali, the king of Hell region, uses the Raja-Tama waves emitted by this raksha to nurture negative energies. Hence, a woman ties rakhi to a man as a symbol of invoking the Earth and taking Earth’s help in restraining this action of King Bali.
In the ancient times, akshata (Unbroken rice grains) were covered in a white cloth, which was tied with a silk thread as rakhi.

Akshata is all encompassing and the silk thread has the ability to rapidly transmit sattvik waves.

Thus, rakhi is made from akshata and silk thread.
When the sister ties the rakhi on her brother’s wrist, the waves of spiritual energy in the sister are transferred to the brother. This activates the Suryanadi (Sun channel) in the brother, and the Deity Shiva Principle in him is awakened. This results in disintegration of the Raja-Tama particles in the environment.

Over a period, this type of rakhi has ceased to exist and today, various types of rakhis are available in the market. Most of these are gaudy and not sattvik. The subtle effect of such non-sattvik rakhis is described ahead :

YES, I AM CHANGING!

YES, I AM CHANGING!

Days slip into weeks, weeks turn into months and months transform into years. Calendars are changing and so am I.

Yes, I  am changing. In certain things age has mellowed me down, in others I have become more aggressive . Sometimes I find myself acting very wise and sometimes I just go crazy. Certain issues will have me speaking vociferously whereas at others I just shrug and remain silent.

Yes, I  am changing. After loving my parents, my siblings, my spouse, my children, my friends, now I have started loving myself.

Yes, I  am changing. I just realised that I am not “ Atlas ” and the world does not rest on my shoulders.

Yes, I  am changing. I now stopped bargaining with poor vegetables and fruits vendors. After all, a few rupees more is not going to burn a hole in my pocket but it might help the poor fellow save for his daughter’s school fees.

Yes, I  am changing. I pay the auto walla/ cab waala and walk away without waiting for the change. The extra money might bring a smile on his face. After all he is toiling much harder for a living than me.

Yes, I  am changing. I stopped telling the elderly that they have already narrated that story many times. After  all, the story makes them walk down the memory lane and relive the past.

Yes, I  am changing. I have learn not to correct  people even when I know they are wrong. After all ,the onus of making everyone perfect is not on me.Peace is more precious than perfection.

Yes, I  am changing.  I give compliments freely and generously . After all its  a mood enhancer not only for the recipient but also for me.

Yes, I  am changing.I have learnt not to bother about my creased shirt or mismatched skirt. After all, personality speaks louder than appearances.

Yes, I  am changing. Nowadays I don't bother  if my eyebrows are not done or fine lines are showing on my forehead. After all beauty of my soul outshines the beauty of my face.

Yes, I  am changing.I am learning not to let others make me feel incompetent. After all I am not only what they see in me. I might not be good at certain things but I am excellent at others.

Yes, I  am changing. I walk  away from people who don't value me.After all, they might not know my worth, but I do.

Yes, I  am changing. I remain cool when someone plays dirty politics to outrun me in the rat race. After all I am not a rat and neither am I in any race.

Yes, I  am changing. I am learning not to be embarrassed by my emotions. After all it's my emotions that make me human.

Yes, I  am changing. I now tell  people if I like them. After all ,there is nothing wrong in liking someone.

Yes, I  am changing. I have learnt that its better to drop the ego than to break a relationship. After all, my ego will keep me aloof whereas with relationships I will never be alone.

Yes, I  am changing.I demand  for whatever  is due to me.After all, accepting injustice is almost as bad as doing injustice.

Yes, I  am changing.I have learnt to live each day as if it were the last. After all, it might be the last .

Yes, I  am changing. I am doing what makes me happy. After all, I am responsible for my happiness, and I owe it to me.

And I am loving the new me!

MOMS ARE MOMS......

MOMS ARE MOMS......
A 50 year old lady, who suddenly started learning how to swim instead of her usual routine work of going to a temple !!!!

Everyone was curious and asked her:  "why the change in your interest to swimming now a days?"

The lady, with a look of helplessness replied: "Whenever my son and daughter-in-law quarrel each other She ( Daughter-in-law)  always asks my son : - "If your mom and I fall in water, whom will you save first?"

And because I do not want to put my son in a difficult position, so I am learning how to swim!"

A few days later husband and wife were quarrelling again, and the daughter-in-law unreasonably asked:  " now tell me! If your mom and I fall in water, whom will you save first?"

Husband replied:
"I don't have to get down in the water, my mom knows how to swim, she will save you."

Wife refused to relent: "No, you have to jump in the water, and have to save one of us"

Husband replied: "Then you will surely die.... because I don't know how to swim .... and my mom will definitely save me first."

Lesson to be learnt

A rat swallowed a diamond and the owner of the diamond contracted a man to kill the rat

When the rat hunter arrived to kill the rat there were more than a thousand rats bunched up and one sitting by itself away from the pack

He killed the one by itself and that was the exact one that had swallowed the diamond

The amazed owner of the diamond asked: How did you know it was that rat ??

He responded: "Very easy.... *When idiots get rich they don't mix with others !!!"*

Our Journey Together is so Short!

A young lady sat in a bus. At the next stop a loud and grumpy old lady came and sat by her. She squeezed into the seat and bumped her with her numerous bags.

The person sitting on the other side of the young lady got upset, asked her why she did not speak up and say something.

The young lady responded with a smile:

"It is not necessary to be rude or argue over something so insignificant, the journey together is so short. I get off at the next stop."

This response deserves to be written in golden letters:

*"It is not necessary to argue over something so insignificant, our journey together is so short"*

If each one of us realized that our time here is so short; that to darken it with quarrels, futile arguments, not forgiving others, discontentment and a fault finding attitude would be a waste of time and energy.

Did someone break your heart? *Be calm, the journey is so short.*

Did someone betray, bully, cheat or humiliate you? *Be calm, forgive, the journey is so short.*

Whatever troubles anyone brings us, let us remember that *our journey together is so short.*

No one knows the duration of this journey. No one knows when their stop will come. *Our journey together is so short.*

Let us cherish friends and family. Let us be respectful, kind and forgiving to each other. Let us be filled with gratitude and gladness.

After all, *Our Journey Together is so Short!*
